Interpol is an American based band who is one of the hottest acts on the New York independent music scene. The band has released several albums, each taking more critical acclaim than the previous.
Interpol was an interesting band as they had difficulty figuring out the name of their band. They considered several other names including The French Letters before finally settling on Interpol. The band came up with the idea to name itself Interpol after Paul Banks, their lead vocalist, was teased in school for having a Spanish accent. In a recent interview Paul Banks also said that they chose Interpol as it sounded "mysterious" and similar to Interpol. He also said that the band chose the name mostly for fun.
Interpol originally got together at New York University, all the band members were students. The band started out by releasing a few demos in between 1998 and 2001. However, in 2001 they were signed by the major indie label Matador. Their first release with Matador was a self titled LP that include songs PDA and NYC. This LP launched them even further and the masses craved a full release from Interpol.
Turn On The Bright Lights was the world's wake up call to Interpol. This full length release helped launch them to the top of the indie music scene. Shortly after the release the band appeared on shows such as David Letterman and Last Call With Carson Daily. If this was not enough, they also won a New Music Express tour slot, giving them further massive exposure.
Our Love to Admire was a new direction for the band. They left Matador and went in search of a new label. They finally found themselves at Capitol Records. The album was released on July 10th to mass hysteria. Interpol landed Our Love to Admire at #4 on Billboard's top 200 albums.
